Mars Transits as a Learning Tool

Since Mars is the flavor of the day around here as he approaches Pluto for the final pass in the current Mars/Pluto opposition, I thought I’d talk a little about how Mars can help us understand our charts. Those of us with strong Mars signatures in our charts, lots of Aries or Scorpio or Mars on the Angles, are usually more aware of Mars transits but everyone can benefit from following Mars around their chart by transit because his energy is effective at triggering natal aspects.

Typically, Mars spends a couple of days at a degree point and a couple of years making a full circuit of the Zodiac. However, he does go retrograde every couple of years or so and then he can spend roughly six months in the same couple of signs . . . as he has this past winter in Gemini and Cancer. And we all know how comfortable THAT is!

As Mars makes his way around a natal chart, he has the greatest impact when approaching the Angles: 1st, 4th, 7th & 10th House cusps. I have found Betty Lundsted’s 10 degree waxing orb reasonably accurate in this case. Mars emerging from the 12th house to hit the Ascendant can have a dramatic effect on us because it can seem like we get this huge surge of energy seemingly out of nowhere. On the cusp of the 4th house, we can find ourselves taking care of projects around the house, doing things for our mothers and just enjoying being at home. Mars transiting the 7th house cusp focuses attention of all sorts of issues surrounding our one-on-one relationships from our significant other to business partners and of course, when Mars hits the Mid-heaven, our professional life/career is dominate.

Whether Mars transits are experienced as energizing or irritating depends on the aspect he’s making to our personal planets. And it is very important to take note of how that particular planet is aspected natally. For instance, Mars conjuncting the Sun is usually a nice energy boost but if the Sun is part of a T-square, Mars will be squaring both the planets that square the Sun and the nice little energy boost could turn into a screaming temper tantrum! If we are aware of this tendency ahead of time, we can go with the energy rather than resisting it and adding to the heat.

As astrologers, we can use our own charts and transiting Mars to gain understanding on how particular aspect formations function and how wide an orb is useful too. My chart is pretty simple with most of the planets lumped together in the upper left hand quadrant, no oppositions and only one inconjunct. But those who have many planets spread out around the wheel with all kinds of nifty formations like Kites, T-squares, Grand Crosses and Trines, etc, following Mars as he conjuncts each planet in those formations will give you insight into how those formations actually work! Lucky you! :::yeah, right:::

And anyone whose chart has planets or Angles from 0 to 3 degrees in the Cardinal signs is going to get a big “heads up” here next week (the Mars/Pluto opposition) and on the Full Moon in Libra, March 21st (the Vernal Equinox). . . Astrology in Action 101.

  1. Yay! we have a project coming in! Thank God for Henrich! (former employee who now works for one of the major oil companies and sends us work)

  2. Hee…. with a planet and angles at those Cardinal degrees, I guess my own life will be my own best astrology lesson for? :eesh: Oh yes… the equinox is ALSO my 5th and final wedding anniversary with the soon-to-be-ex. Hmm. I think “coming to completion” with my self-image and marriage will be quite the theme, between Mars-Pluto and the full moon.Enjoy the grandbaby!

  3. Hm, it gives me some sextiles and trines to personal planets, but the only dynamic transit is to my Eros conjunct the Aries point (0 Aries). Alas, I don’t see that doing any good! Likely to just irritate me 🙂

  4. Yes, enjoy the grandbaby :)At least my Cardinals are more or less in the middle degrees. But they can still be affected considering the orb. I was really surprised last year when I realized Mars wouldn’t leave Gemini and Cancer for so long. I think it’s finally time I got new shelves in my bedroom (doing 4th house things).

  7. mmmm… me 3 cap…him 0 libra..hello pluto/mars..burning bridges for sure..HELP??!! {grin} maybe

  8. Great couple of posts, Neith! Very timely, too. I’ve been downtown for the past three days (why I haven’t been in the astro-blogosphere) and have been picking up an ugly vibe. Even though Mars is not impacting my chart in any significant way, I’m feeling the anger and agitation around me, and it’s extremely uncomfortable. I can’t wait for this to be over. I have a client who’s having a devil of a time. He was born in mid-1959 and not only is going through his Saturn-Pluto conjunction, but also has Pluto sitting on his natal Saturn at 0′ Cap and Mars coming up in opposition. The Moon conjoins Pluto today, too, which is amping up the Mars-Pluto energy. I wish I could tell you what’s happening in this guy’s life as an example, but he apparently has gone underground, and so I have no idea. I suspect there’s a major internal shift happening, which sometimes can create temporary depression as the system shuts down to handle the readjustment. This is all the more tricky when anger (Mars) is involved.

  9. Uh uh …I was going to say that I don’t have a professional life or career to think about (fulltime mum who dabbles in this, that and the other).Maybe that’s the point….Hmmm

  10. Mars has been going backward and forward over my MC and there has certainly been movement in the career area for me these past months – not all of it comfortable. Also a load of IC/ 4th House mishaps – particularly during January ….

  11. Hi!! I’m back from playing with the baby . . . watching her Aries Moon self playing with her Aries moon granddad was so much fun (Libra moon gramma played peek-a-boo with her, a back & forth game!). :-DThe poor darling is getting her first teeth in and since she has both a zero degree Sun in Pisces & zero degree Aries Moon, Pluto is transiting sextile her Sun & square to her Moon. This week may be the most intense phase with Mars in Cancer at zero degrees. It was good to get a break though that also means all the normal routine chores are still waiting . . . gee, wouldn’t it be nice is the house cleaned itself & clothes washed themselves?! ::grin::Great comments from everyone too . . . more time! I need more time!! ::snort::

  12. Over the last few days I’ve been very, very angry (essentially so angry that I haven’t been able to think straight on anything) on what I thought was originally a 5th house issue (my children) but has basically unfolded into becoming a 4th house issue (mother – who just happens to be a … Capricorn). The other significant person involved in this issue just happens to be a Cancer native…Today, I don’t feel angry at all just very, very tired and empty.

  13. Mandy, i just want to sympathize. I have swung between inexplicably furious and tired and empty as well. And for me the subject seems to shift as well… 12th house issues and 7th house issues. And another person involved is a Cancer. Anyway, hang in there.

  14. Today, I don’t feel angry at all just very, very tired and empty.Mandy, i just want to sympathize. I have swung between inexplicably furious and tired and empty as well. These sound like classic examples of the Mars/Pluto opp hitting the angles of both your charts – triggering the seesaw effect. You two share a strong Libra element in your charts too. I’m going to project much will be resolved one way or another following the Full Moon in Libra. This week may see the most intense phase. I associate the “empty” place with Pluto/Pluto transits and having been pushed past rage into a state of detachment. There is clarity there of a sort.

  15. Well I’m sure all the Libra has something to do with how hard this is for both of us, then. The anger I feel almost feels like it’s coming from outside me, beyond my control. And I absolutely HATE HATE HATE conflict… I dread ever having to initiate it. I’m an absolute wreck this week because I don’t know what to DO with all the anger I feel.Libra Sun + angular Cancer Mars sounds like a recipe for very poor (or at least conflicted) anger processing, actually.

  16. And I absolutely HATE HATE HATE conflict… I dread ever having to initiate it. I’m an absolute wreck this week because I don’t know what to DO with all the anger I feel. With a watery Mars/Asc + Air sun/moon too, being very angry literally makes me ill too. Physical activity is helpful for me, especially doing something outside in the fresh air. Water signs are better at going with their emotions and Air signs like to detach & get some perspective if possible.

  17. Water signs are better at going with their emotions and Air signs like to detach & get some perspective if possible.Uh uh not this air sign – not with this doozy of a mess that’s around me right now. I don’t like the anger – because of the stress its been placing on my body but I’m kinda wanting to feel this.I don’t want to get a perspective / detachment on it because then its kinda easy that the doozy never happened and we can all be one happy family again (not). Its another line in the sand time again and I need that anger to make sure that paint is good and solid on that line. *sigh* Not getting at you Neith – just at the family circumstances…
