Synastry Basics: Ruler of the Seventh House

I had one of those “aha” moments the other day about what we can learn from studying the ruler of the seventh house and the aspects to it in our natal charts. It came about after reading Karen’s post on the sixth house on Ravenesque and connecting the dots for the ruler of my sixth house.

Using either Koch or Placidus house systems, Taurus is the sign on the cusp of both my sixth and seventh houses and therefore Venus rules both of those houses. My Venus in Sagittarius is in my first house and if I use a 3-4 degree orb, the only aspects to it are a semi-sextile to my Libra Sun and a septile to Neptune in Libra. This doubles down the whole Venus influence because Libra is also ruled by her.

The semi-sextile essentially reinforces the whole Libra dynamic of needing balance, equity and harmony in my one on one relationships, clearly a reason I am adept at sidestepping confrontation. Those people who delight in confrontation, drama and turmoil in their personal lives are those who will see my back as I head out the door. The older I become, the greater my need for harmonious relationships.

Venus-Neptune aspects in general create sensitivity to discord on one hand, and on the other a deep appreciation for beauty and peace. Since this applies to both my partnerships and my work environment, when either one or the other of those has been extremely stressful, my health suffered (Venus in the first – the body). Though I will say in my defense, I have been much clearer about leaving stressful romantic relationships than stressful jobs.

Jupiter and Uranus in Aries are currently trine my Venus, making their combined resources available for instituting change in a relatively easy manner. In little less than a year, Jupiter will be moving through the second half of Aries and opposing first my Moon, then my Sun-Chiron in Libra. It doesn’t take much to realize acting now under the trine to Libra’s ruler gives me a whole lot more latitude than waiting for Jupiter’s opposition to kick in. Jupiter in Aries is not especially good at evaluating how much force to use . . . 😀

To connect the dots in your chart first determine the ruler of the sign on the Descendant, see what house it is located in and how it is aspected. I recommend using tight orbs (3-4 degrees) too.

  1. I have Leo ruling the 7th House and one interpretation that has really bugged me in the past is the ‘attention seeking’ one. I don’t seek attention anymore than the next person but will insist on a ‘happy’ relationship that is fun to experience. I have dated a LOT of water signs, with Cancer Sun in the 5th, and near drowned lol and have always been really at home with fire signs, despite fire being my weakest element. There are a fair few negatives with a Leo 7th but it makes no excuses, which the rest of my chart really needs and has no doubt been the main source of my interesting and FUN life 🙂

    • The way I see it is anyone with Leo on the DES, the natal Sun is critical. With your Sun in Cancer, ‘attention seeking’ is so not happening! I do see where having a 5th house Sun, Leo’s home house, would mean a fire sign partner is a good fit. A fire sign DES says more to me about really enjoying a partner who brings warmth and enthusiasm. 😀

  2. Hi Diane – My 7th house is ruled by Pisces, and in my chart Jupiter and Neptune are conjunct in Scorpio and are placed in the 2nd and 3rd. Both are conjunct Mercury, and all three square my Aquarius Moon in the 5th. The only other tight aspect is a sextile to Pluto in my 12th.

It took me a long time to figure out what kind of person I was most compatible with. I lucked out with my Scorpio husband, although he’s never shared my need for social relationships, which is fine by me. What’s become most important is sharing a basic spiritual/philosophical outlook on life and having common values and depth of connection/passion. My Scorpio husband’s Taurus rising helps me feel secure and grounded. And unlike most of my friends, he doesn’t feel threatened by my “insights”.

    • LOL, LB! A Scorp husband fits beautifully with those aspects! Water sign on the DES, rulers in Scorp and the square to your Moon. Lots of intensity all right. 🙂

Both of you having earth signs on the ASC makes for a better fit also. If most of the house cusps are compatible, it generally means you share similar ideas about all facets of your lives.

  3. The ruler of my 7th House is Mercury. Mercury is in my 5th, conjunct Chiron, trine my Moon, and opposed Uranus/MC.
In my relationships a deep connection with someone I feel free with is key. I need someone to take me out of my Capricorn comfort zone while acknowledging what a sensitive cookie I am. Oh, and I require lots of 5th House love:) No standoffish types need apply, LOL

  4. Hey Christy!!

Oh, and I require lots of 5th House love:) No standoffish types need apply, LOL

Truth! I hadn’t thought of it before but having your Sun & Mercury in the 5th gives both a fire sign overlay. With Venus/Mars/ASC in fire, it makes a heck of a lot of sense, you love being around fire sign people. 5th house Sun in particular seems to provide a window into your essential self for fiery energy to enter . . . if that makes sense. 🙂

  5. I have a tough time with the ruler of my DC, Diane – either Saturn in 2nd squaring my Sun and very tightly sextling my Moon, or Mercury conjunct Pluto in 4th! I don’t know if I’m my AC is in the last two degrees of Gemini or first degree of Cancer. :/

    • whoops, correction. 2nd potential DC ruler would be a bonkers Jupiter in Aries/10th almost conjunct Chiron. Either way, I have a heck of a rulership situation. Fits my love life, I guess.

      • LOL, Jessica! If I were you I’d prefer the Moon-Saturn sextile (even w/it sq your Sun) to Jupiter inconj Venus & conj Chiron. 🙂

Did you notice Saturn in Libra squaring your ASC-DES? It will be again in about a month with Mars in tow. Uranus transits are supposed to be good for rectifying charts too . . . and you know where Uranus is right now!! 😀

        • 🙂 At least it’s an out-of-sign square!

OH! I did, I did notice Saturn, but I had to think about it. On the night of April 3rd, at a big family event, I learned old and very upsetting news about my mom that my sisters had always known but I didn’t. Saturn was at 0 Libra 17′ at the exact moment. The “surprise” nature of the news seems more Uranus (which was at 27 Pisces), but the fact that it was old news and related to old family karma fits with Saturn. The day I got let go of my job, Uranus was at 29 Pisces. However, the day that something quite Uranian that may change my course actually happened on May 27 – ingress into Aries day. Hmmmmmm…. food for thought! Thanks!

          • LOL… I edited that so many times, it’s unintelligible. Anyway! Thanks for the idea, I’ll keep an eye on Saturn this summer. (Or Saturn will keep an eye on me.)

  6. Since I have Aquarius on my Descendant, it’s unclear whether Saturn is the ruler or Uranus, and such different types involved with those two! Could not get anyone at all to stick for many many years, so I suppose Uranus was involved there. Saturn, at least, sticks – and with my Saturn on the cusp of my 5th house love involves some responsibility and caution. And age, I suppose, as my current relationship (someone who sticks) is much older. I also have Chiron conjunct my Descendant, though, which has made it a more painful place. But that also makes it a healing place.

  7. I could make a good case for both Uranus & Saturn. Since you have a very nice trine between those two, that helps you integrate the need for autonomy with a strong sense of responsibility. Being creative about living situations is good.

Being with someone who is very comfortable in their own skin – which we can become as we mature – is very important. The things that drove us completely around the bend in our twenties don’t have the same impact when we are over fifty! 🙂

  8. I have Aquarius on the Descendant too, and I definitely feel both the Saturn and the Uranus sides of it. Partly because my Mars square Uranus tends to play itself out in relationships, and partly because I often feel like I’m playing Saturn for my partners! Sigh.

One of my closest friends/exes has Capricorn on the dsc and we had composite Venus/Saturn conjunct, so Aquarius isn’t all fun party all the times, it can rise to the occasion when need be. My husband has Venus in Aquarius on the MC, and Uranus in the 7th, so I get back what I give to some degree.

And you’re right, the things that drove me batty ten years ago are not things that even faze me now… I imagine I’ll have a new set of peeves in another ten years 😀

Being the Saturn partner is just a drag. The times my Saturn in Leo opposed someone else’s Aqua Sun it usually did not end well.

  10. I have a question…I’m really into astrology, but I am by no means an expert. It just fascinates me. I’ve read that the 5th house is Romance and teh 7th house is partnerships and marriages. I’m a sagittarius and my 5th house is in Aquarius, and my boyfriend’s 5th house is in Sagittarius and he’s an Aquarius. So that would be a good trait for a romance since our 5th houses are conjunct? My 7th house is Aries and his 7th house is Aquarius. That would make them sextile with each other right? So does that mean there’s potential for a marriage? Or we’re just better off friends? I’ve read that through the 7th house you can tell if marriage will ensue or be close to follow. Here’s the chart for each of us because I’ve just struggled trying to figure it all out. I know we have our Mars squared, and that my Saturn is conjunct with his Mars. And I’ve read that both of these mean difficulties. But We’ve been together for a year and 7 months. I feel like I can trust him 100% and we have a really good relationship and an over all GREAT time together. He’s my best friend and he says I’m his. So I’m kind of wondering that even though we are squared with those two aspects, does everything else balance us out? Also, What does it mean if our sun signs are sextile, our ascendant signs are sextile, BUT my ASC is trine with his SUN and his ACS is trine with my SUN. Does that mean something good that could possibly counter the two squares that we have??? HELP, lol, anyone, please tell me whatever you can about our charts’ compatibility!

    • Welcome, Suki.

But We’ve been together for a year and 7 months. I feel like I can trust him 100% and we have a really good relationship and an over all GREAT time together. He’s my best friend and he says I’m his.

Overall it would appear what you two have is working. Your Moons are in compatible signs and your Mercury’s are both in Capricorn – good for communicating emotionally and intellectually. I notice you have Libra rising and am wondering if Saturn is transiting close to your ASC, bringing up these questions.

If you wish to email me both of your birth places, I would be happy to take a quick look at your synastry and write a post on it. Just use the form on my About Diane page.
