Observations: Pluto’s Priorities

Destruction comes . . . © Diane Lang

Pluto in Capricorn looms large these days in part because of the support he receives from Saturn in Scorpio and that dratted square to Uranus in Aries. If you are dealing with a Pluto transit of any kind you are likely getting lessons in Pluto’s priorities and how little they take your personal priorities into account. If we are both smart and lucky we will figure out how to align our priorities with Pluto’s.

Pluto is a great one for clearing what he considers the old out of our lives in order to make space for something he feels will be better. Nothing is sacred either . . . not lovers, careers, homes or beloved family members. Death and rebirth are under Pluto’s dominion and he does remind everyone of that fact sooner or later.

Those of us with a powerful Pluto presence in our charts natally often look at the lives of other people around us and wonder how those folks managed to have careers, families and homes without a lot of fuss and bother. When I was twenty I had what I felt was a viable plan. I was in nursing school, dating a very nice guy and expected to marry and have a family. So did not happen . . . took me another nine years to get my degree, didn’t marry until I was in my early forties and the only children I have are a couple of wonderful step-daughters. Until I got married (about the time Pluto was busy transiting the last ten degrees of Scorpio), I lived with the minimum of possessions and moved every couple of years. Perhaps Pluto’s goal was to keep my attention firmly turned inward and focused on learning to accept myself, warts and all. It worked! As it turns out owning a home, having a husband and family requires a lot of time and energy leaving little time for introspection . . . as some of you know all too well! 😀

Of course, Pluto conjoining, opposing or squaring our personal planets by transit usually gets our full attention. When it is sextile or trine those planets or out of orb all together, sometimes it is the matters of the house he is in we are more aware of. I really can’t say . . . right now Pluto is back exactly conjoined my progressed Mars! Maybe one of these he’ll leave me alone. I hope.

From now until the end of the year, Pluto is sextile Saturn, together creating a Yod with Jupiter in Gemini – activating 8° to 9°. If you have personal planets and/or Ascendant at those degrees in any sign, this important pattern will affect your chart. I have Saturn in Leo . . . fun!

  1. Here’s something to look at: Ceres! Because she successfully negotiated w/Pluto! The closest aspect in my chart is a sextile from Ceres in the 3rd sextile Venus in the 1st. Perhaps one reason I survived Pluto transits conjoining ALL my personal planets & ASC. Pluto’s conjunction to my Venus was probably the mildest of the lot too. 🙂

  2. Saturn in taurus 3rd, jupiter in libra 8th, uranus in libra 8th, asc in cap, chiron in aries 2nd all early degrees. All change jiggling my nerves!
I’m certainly feeling the overall pluto through my 1st house. I’m early forties no kids and resonated with your story. I think that marriage is on the cards after a vary radical first half of life. Saturn still going through my 9th house and I hope now I’m on his opposition I’ve learned what I need to teach. Here endeth the lesson 🙂 …for now I hope.

    • Hi Karen!

Good point! We go through some major cyclical transits in our forties usually starting w/Uranus opp Uranus, then Saturn opp Saturn and Neptune sq Neptune. Why those years are called “midlife crisis”. 😛

    • Hi Debbie!
Nothing like Uranus transiting back & forth over Saturn to act as a wake up call. Saturn in Aries often has trouble taking action due to too much second guessing.

  3. I have Pluto transiting the 12th at present. It will start to conjunct my Ascendant and that’s where I see the big transformation occurring… whether I go willingly or not:) The Uranus-Pluto square aspect has also played a significant role in how I express myself. I have a lot to learn about the third house: Communication, siblings and more!

That’s Pluto for you! Using personal power, developing trust in one’s self are often part of this transit. Sometime the only option is to let go of ANY attempt to influence the behaviors of those closest to us . . . says someone who had their little fingers burned! 🙂

  4. I remember when I first studied Bernadette Brady and she mentioned using the outers in a limited way when working on personal transits, as they were more generational and mundane, than personal. Of course I only half took notice of that at the time, because I like Neptune and Pluto, but after this last few years, I am waiting and seeing. It is tough for me to judge too as even my recent Pluto/Sun opposition was first experienced with Jupiter retrograding over the Moon base of my t-square, then moving over my Rise, square my Nodes, then MC, followed by the second round with Saturn in Libra. Nothing Plutonian, or even Neptunian that cannot be explained by Saturn or Jupiter :/ Especially as I have Saturn in fall and a strong Jupiter. Next major from Pluto, is the conjunction with my Moon, which again finds Jupiter retrograding over the Mars apex of the t-square. Tough to judge because the two major personals have been in strong aspect at the same time. Joys of a splay chart!

    • Hey Pixie!

I’ve noticed that with splay charts! Mine is almost the other extreme, a Bowl Pattern, only one tighter is the Bundle, fewer distractions. LOL One thing in particular I’ve noticed following an intense Pluto transit is a sense of detachment from the issues dealt with. Repeated Pluto transits seem to burn this feeling of detachment ever deeper. Curious that . . .

      • Agreed, but it could also be stated about Saturn as well. He is not the most mushy and loving of influences 🙂

        • He is not the most mushy and loving of influences 🙂

Indeed!! Curmudgeonly on the whole! 😛

  5. I have 8 degrees natal Venus in my first house Sag. For a good part of the year transiting Pluto in 2nd house Cappy is trining my MC. Should I dare to think happy thoughts?

    • Hi Linda!

Ebullience tempered by the practicalities? 😀 I like the Pluto-MC trine for making constructive career choices.

  6. Thank you for this eloquent post! I had Pluto squaring my Sun for the last two years. I’m in a much better, healthier place now, but without the perspective of Pluto = Helping You Grow (Brutally), I would have had a much harder time coming to terms with what was happening.

Oh boy . . . tough one! Sounds like you are emerging from the experience in good shape! Good for you! 😀

  7. When Pluto made a conjunction to my Venus in Scorpio which is opposite Uranus in Taurus, my 30 year marriage ended. Extremely traumatic, but turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. My Mars in Virgo was also making a trine to the Grand Convergence which occurred in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Mars rules my 7th house of partnerships. Met a wonderful man with whom I spent 5 years. Ending the relationship was OK. I learned so much from him and also made tremendous career achievements during that time and afterwards. Now Pluto is making a trine to my Mars and I have met the love of my life. I am always open to Pluto’s life changing messages!

  8. Thanks for the positive remarks regarding career choices. As of yesterday, I began looking for a new one; unfortunately, out of neccesity but I think it’s fates’ way of saying it is in my best interest that I move on.

  9. You have always been helpful…any quick advice for me libra rising cancer sun 6/25/1981 Mount Vernon, NY 155pm…..I am very unclear these days

    • Hi Sean,

The outstanding transit I can see is Uranus in Aries squaring your Sun. An extended transit because Uranus slowing to station direct yesterday. It won’t end until around 13 January, unfortunately. Saturn in Libra pushed you hard for pretty much its whole stay. Sometimes we become so used to bracing for the bumps when the road smooths out it takes awhile to adjust.

I see Uranus is in your 6th house. Is the stress affecting your health or are you dealing w/unpredictable co-workers? 6th Moon folk often commit emotionally to their vocations too.

Take care & do what you can to reduce stress in your life!

      • Thank you so much Diane. Yes. You hit the nail on the head. Saturn wore me out and sometimes I feel like I have to keep looking over my shoulder, even though I do feel the slow easing off of that pressure, I am fairly used to it so January 13 is not too far way….I actually am about 85% sure that I will be making a job move in the first two months of 2013 so you hit that on the head too…thanks to smuch

  10. If I had a choice, I’d rather go through a Pluto transit than have Pluto aspecting personal planets in the natal chart. Having to go through destruction again and again is utterly exhausting. If it’s true that we choose our birth charts, I hope I never make that mistake again. It’s horrible feeling like you’re stuck in Groundhog Day. I’d rather go through it once and have it over and done with.

    • Hey Eme Kah!

What popped into my head this morning after reading this & other people’s comments on this post is the whole “one man’s meat is another man’s poison” thing. Thank god for diversity . . . if we all responded the same to outer planet transits, it would be a real mess, wouldn’t it? 😀

      xoxoxo diane~

  11. @ Eme Kah… I completely agree with you. Says the woman with natal Pluto squaring her Sun, Mercury and Venus. Since 2008 Pluto conjuncted my natal Sun and Mercury, and now I am having a ball with Pluto square Pluto. And then for dessert Pluto conjunct natal Venus, but well, hey, I am fond of desserts 😉
I know what you mean. I am living Ground Hog life. In my worst moments I ask myself and the heavens why this is all happening to me in a few years, and why not just one thingy at the time. Next question: why do I have to learn so much, why other people are living in pure unspoilt dumb happiness? I seem to get more alienated every day. If I knew the reason WHY, maybe it would be a bit easier to go on. Maybe.
