Observations: Neptune Transits – Glorious Confusion

Quelle surprise! With all those planets in Pisces floating around the sky my mind has wandered back to Neptune one more time to contemplate some of the fine points of what happens under a Neptune transit.

Along with most other serious astrologers, I have a copy of Robert Hand’s “Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living” in my astrological reference library. Whilst I find him a bit on the sour side, I have no problem acknowledging his enormous contribution to astrology today and this book on transits certainly covers the basics. I sat down and read the chapter on Neptune transits to pick up some pointers.

One thing to always keep in mind about Neptune transits is they last a long time, often spending years in one house. I’ve been around for awhile and Neptune has only moved from my eleventh house to my third house where it will remain until 2017. As a result we become accustomed to the effects and usually only notice Neptune either on entering a house or when he exactly aspects a personal planet or the Ascendant, otherwise not so much. The worst of the confusion and illusion occur with the first pass of a transit or when conjoining a house cusp though there are no guarantees we’ll figure out how far out in left field we are for quite some time.

If we does make the effort to set boundaries and learn to see through the worst of Neptune’s illusions, then we can begin to be able to discern important subtleties in regards to matters ruled by the house Neptune is transiting. For instance, Neptune transits through the seventh house can gradually teach us to pay close attention to our initial impressions of people and act on those rather than allowing other people’s opinions or our own illusions to override those. Neptune often hammers home lessons in un-manifested potential too, whether it pertains to the ideal career or believing we’ve found our soul mate.

The empirical data I’ve gathered suggests once Neptune fully enters a house, i.e. makes no more passes over the cusp, its influence recedes into the background until it makes another exact aspect. I believe this is due to Neptune’s amorphous nature that requires some type of boundary to be visible. Love is a glorious intangible until it is expressed. Compassion is best learned through application as are tolerance and patience. So it follows the best way to counteract the worst of Neptune’s confusions is to do something real. Don’t just dream about meeting the perfect partner, go out and meet people in the real world. Volunteer in a soup kitchen or your local dog and cat pound. Go talk to folks already working in your dream career to find out if it would be a good fit for you. And if you have Neptune transiting your third house as I do, then starting writing or blogging . . . a good way to find whether or not you really do have something others want to hear about.

By the way, if it isn’t obvious by now, it’s Saturn who offers the best methods for turning Neptune’s dreams into realities. Those who have natal Saturn-Neptune aspects, especially if those tap into a personal planet (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) often get a handle on Neptune transits more easily than those who don’t but it still takes focus and dedication.

How’s this for an unsettling thought to close on? Neptune rules infectious diseases so perhaps natal Neptune aspects can give either a degree of immunity or make one more vulnerable to Neptune’s particular brand of insanity. Transits can be seen as inoculating against the illusions related to the house being transited with the first pass being the first inoculation. *grin*

  1. Hi Diane 🙂

How are you? Hope you are well. Things are plodding along here, few less lows than in January, but still tacky at times.

I have to put up my hand as a Neptune fangirl at the moment, as his trine to my Sun has really helped me to transcend a lot of this mess. I do have Mercury trine Neptune natally, which is one of the more positive Neptune connections, from what I have read and can testify. OH don’t get me wrong my financial brain is bleh, technical brain is on holidays, and forget about working through any sad moment without sobs, not tears, sobs. But having so much water, I am a big baby anyway. It has been the heightened creative side of things, the love of music, film, art even, that has really helped me to work with all of this upset. I have also fallen back in love with tarot in a major way, even hubby is loving it at the moment, as we have been researching collector historical decks and the like. It’s been great. So I am lucky to have that natal aspect as he has been a blessing with this fairly non-stop Saturn impact over the last few years. Counting down when the old fella moves off my MC. I think I will throw a non-boozy party. Oh lol I ‘tried’ to have a glass of wine. Tried. Two glasses with Thai and I had a two day hangover. I was SO ill. Another plus with Neptune, the heightened sensitivity tp keep me on my tea-totaller track!

    • Hey You! 😀

I was just wondering how you were managing these days & am very happy to hear you are loving some Neptune! 😀 Hey, as each of the planets in Pisces completes a Grand Trine w/your natal Mercury-Neptune trine, it has to be doing wonderful things for your sense of well-being. Cancers & Scorps are feeling the love now. I’m grateful for my Scorp planets . . . probably why I’m doing as well as I have. LOL

No doubt Saturn crossing the MC & transiting the 10th is intense. Seems like enormous effort is expended for little immediate return. Tarot has always been very good to you & I love what you do with it!

Ouch! Can’t recall the last time I drank anything alcoholic. We’re pretty much a “dry” house around here. With all my 12th house planets & Moon conj Neptune, being a teetotaler is for the best for me too. 😦

      • Yeah not liking this last trip with Saturn. Life must have been really bad last time for me to be thinking it was a great transit lol My sense of well being has been great – anxiety has been awful, as have the sads (to be expected) but health wise, I am feeling fabulous and am very spiritually connected, which helps so much. Tarot helps a lot, thankful for that

Good to hear! You are obviously doing something right then. 😀

        • Another of those serendipitous “long arm” photos taken by yours truly. It was taken when Venus in Sagittarius was still in my 1st house sextile my Moon. 😀

          • *taking notes for when to put on make up, straighten hair and take new pic* (I need all the help I can get these days lol how soon it all fades sigh)

          • I’m going to have to do a post w/suggestions for the best transits for looking our best. Having the right person behind the camera helps too. My Scorp older sister is genius at snapping shots of people at exactly the WRONG moment. Her daughters & I run when we see her coming w/a camera. LOL

  2. ‘Confused’ lol natal 10th house and a 2nd house transit. Solar return neptune 8th house. Jobseeking in never never la la land…that’s how it feels!!!!!!

    • Hey Kaz!

natal 10th house and a 2nd house transit. Solar return neptune 8th house. Jobseeking in never never la la land…that’s how it feels!!!!!!
Is Saturn in Scorp now transiting your 10th along w/those Pisces planets+ in your 2nd? No wonder you feel like job seeking in never never land. You might consider looking for work in Neptune/12th house areas like libraries, hospitals, schools, etc. Perhaps Venus joining the Pisces crew will attract some positive feedback for you! *fingers crossed*

      • Saturn is still in my 9th house (placidus system). Perhaps a job offer from abroad or what else something about older men, higher education yadda yadda I dunno!

        • Hmmmmm – I’m wondering if Uranus in Aries finally moving away from your Chiron will help. Uranus hits 7° this weekend after sitting at 6° for seems like forever. Take pressure off your Jupiter too. 🙂

  3. Diane, you definitely do have something others want to read about, no question! I met D with Neptune transiting my 7th – and I was very unsure about him, but kept paying attention to my intuition rather than what seemed rationally right. We’re going on 4 years now! I’ve had 2 passes of Neptune opposite my Venus/Pluto (one last one to come when he stations opposite – oy!) without any ill effects on the relationship. Maybe better for compassion. (Neptune opp Venus/Pluto hasn’t been so kind to my finances, though, with uncertainty around income, sigh.)

In the meantime, sheesh, pMoon conjoining my natal Uranus (will be extended by conjoining my pUranus in Apri). Things sure got disruptive in a hurry! Very variable (and intense!) emotions, anxiety, insecurity, excitement, joy, all kind of unexpected/unusual work possibilities that throw any planning out the window. Just gotta ride it, I guess! pLunar Return coming up in June…

    • Hey Les!

(Neptune opp Venus/Pluto hasn’t been so kind to my finances, though, with uncertainty around income, sigh.)

Venus conj Pluto does want to have some control over income & uncertainty in that regard can be very uncomfortable as I well know. *sigh* I’m planning on enjoying the long break between now & Neptune’s long stay @ 2° in late Fall.

Hopefully when the dust settles, you’ll like the new landscape! You have enough in mutable to be able to adapt . . . just convince your fixed side it will be OK. LOL

  4. Well that is an exceptionally interesting observation about Neptune fully entering a sign. I just checked configurationhunter.com and it looks like Neptune made the full, final entry into Pisces as of 9/22/2012. I’ve been waiting for that, since Neptune has been retrograding back and forth in opposition to my natal Pluto at 29’48” Leo and now it looks like that is finally a separating aspect. No more retrogrades over the Pisces cusp yay!

    • Hi Charles!

I’ve been waiting for that, since Neptune has been retrograding back and forth in opposition to my natal Pluto at 29’48? Leo and now it looks like that is finally a separating aspect. No more retrogrades over the Pisces cusp yay!

Yes, Neptune is well and truly in Pisces now for the duration! I use a very, very small orb for Neptune because of its diffuse nature . . . 1° at the most.

      xoxo diane~
