Earth and water return to once more dominate the sky on the Winter Solstice when the Sun enters earthy Capricorn. The cheery optimism of Sagittarius gives way to the cool practicality of Capricorn for another year. Even though Mercury is still in Sagittarius on the Solstice it will join the Sun, Venus and Pluto in Capricorn on Christmas Eve giving us four planets in the tenth sign, bringing us back to earth with a decided “thud.”
The real blessing of this Solstice is Neptune in Pisces sextile the Sun opening the door for compassion to enter. Given Mars in Libra is busy tightening up a cardinal T-Square with Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn; we need help seeing others as compatriots rather than opponents. If there is any way to shift the focus from exclusion to inclusion, Neptune in Pisces is the one to do it. Kindness, empathy and understanding are all necessary to this process. I would love to see the incredible power of the T-Square used to heal rather than destroy and healing old wounds is an option if we are willing to do the work due to a Chiron-Pluto sextile.
Saturn in Scorpio is still trine Jupiter in Cancer, lucky for us because a spirit of cooperation between these two planets is wonderful for coming up with constructive solutions. Given the next six months features the Mars in Libra retrograde, this trine working quietly in the background is wonderful news.
Coming down on the helpful side is Mercury in Sagittarius semi-sextile to Venus in Capricorn (which stations retrograde on the Solstice). Mercury-Venus aspects typically promote a willingness to at least talk, giving us a starting point to start resolving our differences.
Even having Saturn in Scorpio squaring it won’t completely squelch the warmth of the Leo Moon, supported by a semi-sextile from Jupiter in the Moon ruled sign of Cancer. Home and family offer a refuge from the angst and drama swirling around us in the larger world.
I have to say once I started digging into this Solstice chart the more optimistic I felt about the tone of the next six months. Yes, we have to deal with all the cardinal pushing and shoving but we also have some wonderful support for defusing the worst . . . at least on a personal level. Choose cooperation, compromise, kindness and compassion please.
