On December 23, two days after the Winter Solstice, Saturn makes its entrance into fiery Sagittarius. Saturn is not comfortable in the fire signs because his modus operandi is 180° from that of their ruling planets. Always restless Mars (Aries), the egocentric Sun (Leo) and bombastic Jupiter who rules Sagittarius rub the ever cautious, slow reacting Saturn wrong.
In many ways fixed, pragmatic Scorpio was a better fit for Saturn than Sagittarius will be. Saturn in Scorpio had the additional advantage of being in Mutual Reception with powerful Pluto in Capricorn. There was strong support for those folks who were willing to sit down, shut up and work hard on a regular basis to reach practical goals. I know there are many out there who can’t wait for Saturn to leave Scorpio. Perhaps the Saturn in Scorpio experience will look better in retrospect, a common experience where Saturn is concerned.
The Sagittarius need for freedom to explore new places, interesting philosophies and to indulge in risky behaviors will be sharply curbed by Saturn who believes in commitment and careful planning. Since Saturn will be squaring Neptune in Pisces by sign the entire time it is in Sagittarius, long distance travel may be complicated by illness or may be focused on helping those in need. Remember the increasing number of cruise ships being hit by the norovirus? Not fun. Programs like Doctors without Borders may gain in popularity too.
Saturn in Sagittarius is very similar to Saturn in the ninth house (ruled by Sagittarius). My natal Saturn in Leo is in my ninth house and I can’t recall the last time I travelled solely for pleasure. Other people take vacations every year but not me. When I traveled to Europe in my twenties it was to attend school and even the side excursions when I was living in Finland were largely educational. My experiences with religious and spiritual belief systems over the years lead to the realization I had to develop my own personal one . . . and I have. It has been a path of mastery (Saturn) rather than of faith (Neptune).
Those of us with personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) in Sagittarius, have Sagittarius Rising or have Saturn in Sagittarius natally will have plenty of up close and personal time with this Saturn. Next in line are those with the same in the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces). Prepare to spend more time working and less time playing, folks! Grand plans and big ideas will need to be reined in and refined in order to receive recognition and success.
Saturn is a tough task master and being in Sagittarius is not going to change that. Success will come from doing extensive preparation rather than depending on luck to get us through, so no more flying by the seat of our pants. Nonetheless I wish us all luck and safe travels.
