New Moon in Cancer, July 4, 2016

new moon

This is the first New Moon in awhile that feels like a fresh start is possible. On July 4, 2016, the New Moon at 12° 54′ Cancer, 04:02 AM PDT is loaded with powerful cardinal energy that encourages action. This is a refreshing change from the mutable muddle we’ve been struggling with the past few lunations. The Sun, Moon and Mercury form a tight stellium in cardinal Cancer and how we feel will have a direct impact on our thinking.

One of the things making this New Moon special is its connection to the marvelous earth trine between Jupiter in Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn. The luminaries are sextile Jupiter and oppose Pluto. Jupiter’s influence should be enough to reduce the antagonistic side of the opposition and bring out the cooperative/complementary side. The Cancer-Capricorn axis is always interested in security for home and family. If some financial planning is in order, this New Moon is a great time to set something up. Jupiter in Virgo can help with all the paperwork involved and Pluto in Capricorn’s keen sense for practical, sage investing can make the difference between seeing positive results or financial disaster down the road.

The New Moon’s link to the Saturn-Neptune square is an interesting one. The luminaries are trine Neptune and inconjunct Saturn. Hopefully the cracks in familial relationships revealed by the hard aspect can be mended with generous doses of Neptunian compassion. Even if that’s not possible now, knowing how serious the divisions run may be enough to make people think about the consequences later on.

Venus in Cancer is in a similar position with regards to the waning inconjunct between Mars in Scorpio and Uranus in Aries. She is trine Mars in Scorpio who is finally moving forward, gaining strength by the day. We couldn’t ask for a better aspect for deepening the emotional connection we feel during love making. However, poor Venus is also squaring violently independent Uranus in Aries and that may throw a nasty wrench in the works. This may be due to a person or an unexpected situation blowing in out of nowhere. When Uranus presses on us we can make sudden changes in plans, turn our lives upside down and leave loved ones far behind.

By the Full Moon in Capricorn on July 19, the Jupiter-Pluto trine will be history but we won’t be rid of the Saturn-Neptune square until October (it will exact one more time on September 10). For those who have personal planets or Ascendant in the mutable signs from 9° to 11°, dealing with the push-pull of Saturn and Neptune continues to be a pain.

What we are given on this New Moon are opportunities we can choose to work with or not, as the case may be. The hard aspects to the Cancer stellium and Venus in Cancer will reveal discrepancies and previously hidden flaws in our relationships, both with family and our lovers. Do we kiss and make up or decide it is time to sever the relationship for once and for all. Neptune suggests the need to forgive is paramount but Pluto may not see it that way. Pluto specializes in clearing away the old to make way for something new. It can be the easy way or the hard way, Pluto really doesn’t care. Whatever your decision is be kind and as gentle as possible because people are going to be feeling very sensitive right now . . . it is a Cancer New Moon after all.

  1. Oh crap, I just realized that Saturn-Neptune square will be in my solar return this September! Oh well, will worry about that then. Enjoy the 4th of July holiday and the lovely New Moon!

    • Although even worse – just looking at a friend’s solar return for July 17 and she has Moon and Saturn in Sag conjoined in the 7th house square Neptune in the 11th. And Sun square Uranus in the 12th. I see some restlessness and feeling a little stuck and confused. Hey, maybe something creative will come out of it. 🙂

      • The Solar Returns for Gemini & Virgo this year all have the Saturn-Neptune square front and center, especially rough for those with their Suns from 9° to 12°. Hey, at least it is only one year! The Uranus-Pluto square created havoc in Solar Returns for far longer than that! Creative solutions are the best way out of this one. 😀
