Winter Solstice

Big changes afoot this week! Where we start this week is quite different from where we end it. For one thing we leave Sagittarius Season for Capricorn, always a marked change in tone from exuberant mutable fire to determined cardinal earth.

There are two major events on Monday: Mars leaves detached Aquarius for subtle, sensitive Pisces and Mercury stations retrograde at 15° 07′ Capricorn conjunct Pluto. Both occur well before dawn in the USA.

Admittedly Mars is not at his best in fluid, changeable Pisces because Mars prefers to move in a clear, straight forward manner. However, it is always a mistake to underestimate any planet in Pisces. Watery Pisces has incredible power as anyone can attest to who has experienced the amount of damage a flood or tsunami can do. The only water sign who consistently gets respect is Scorpio but both Cancer and Pisces are forces to be reckoned with also.

I am not of the “crawl under the bed and hide for three weeks” school of thinking when it comes to Mercury retrogrades. They occur three or four times a year and, in my opinion, offer us opportunities to slow down and review decisions we may have made in haste. Mercury in Capricorn is focused and pragmatic, perfect for patiently going back and slogging through whatever it takes to make something right. Having Pluto conjoining Mercury during its station retrograde emphasizes the need for some honest soul searching. Mercury will be retrograde until January 8 when it will station direct at 28° 51′ Sagittarius.

We finally arrive at the Solstice this week. On Wednesday the Sun enters Capricorn and marks the seasonal turning point. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere will very gradually begin to see our days grow longer while those in the Southern Hemisphere are enjoying midsummer.

The Sun enters Saturn ruled Capricorn closely sextile Mars in Pisces and square the Libra Moon. The best aspect in the Solstice chart is Saturn in Sagittarius trine Uranus in Aries and sextile Jupiter in Libra. Exercise tact, diplomacy and your best manners over the next six months if you wish to achieve positive results. If we choose cooperation over confrontation, we can make amazing breakthroughs in understanding. If not, well then we can waste a whole lot of time and energy bickering. Just saying.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day both are blessed with harmonious aspects that will make those days merry and bright. Saturday is the exact trine between Saturn in Sagittarius and Uranus in Aries, perfect for those last minute shoppers lucking on to the right gift. Christmas Day is sweetened with Venus in Aquarius dancing happily with Jupiter in Libra, Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius. No matter how you choose to celebrate these special days, with family or friends, a sense of peace and joy is there to draw on. Hugs and kisses to all!

Monday’s Virgo Moon probably won’t get off to a fast start. In fact it looks like it will be afternoon before the day starts to gel when she catches up to Mercury and Pluto in Capricorn. An early morning opposition to Neptune in Pisces slows the waking up process as well as the fact Virgo’s ruler, Mercury, has just stationed retrograde and is on pause for the day.

After squaring Saturn in Sagittarius during Monday night, the Virgo Moon will quietly go about her business until she squares the Sun at 29° Sagittarius late in the afternoon. After a very brief void-of-course she enters fair minded Libra for the evening. If we stay on task, we should have a reasonably productive day Tuesday with the Virgo Moon helping keep us organized.

Wednesday the Libra Moon makes no aspects to speak of until a late night square to Mercury in Capricorn. Because the Sun is now in Capricorn, we have an abundance of planets in cardinal signs though the elements are now in balance. If we heed the Libra Moon’s desire to compromise in order to work effectively with others, we can make real progress today.

The morning looks very favorable on Thursday when the Libra Moon is trine Venus in Aquarius and conjoins Jupiter in Libra. If you can schedule meetings before lunch to take advantage of this congenial atmosphere do so. After that the Moon will oppose Uranus in Aries and go void-of-course until early Friday morning when she will quietly dive into Scorpio. People will be more interested in doing their own thing than being cooperative Thursday afternoon.

Friday the Scorpio Moon is delighted to greet the Sun in Capricorn midday and Mars in Pisces during the afternoon. Water and earth folk will finally feel more comfortable after the hot, dry atmosphere of Sagittarius Season. Take a more intuitive approach to problem solving in order to tidy up loose ends before the Holidays.

Having the Moon in reflective Scorpio Christmas Eve and Christmas Day may encourage people to recognize that sharing love and giving joy can mean more than expensive gifts. The Scorpio Moon starts Saturday sextile Mercury in Capricorn and ends it sextile Pluto in Capricorn, both aspects favor introspection. It is a good time to count our blessings and express gratitude.

The Scorpio Moon goes void-of-course during the night and spends Sunday in the background. The Moon will finally arrive in Sagittarius Sunday evening and revive the party spirit. A happy Venus in Aquarius makes Christmas morning special!

This is the time of year when it is normal to shift our focus inwards and contemplate what the past year brought into our lives. The convivial atmosphere of Sagittarius Season fades quickly this week once the Sun enters Capricorn, aided and abetted by Mercury shifting into reverse on Monday. I want to wish everyone a delightful, happy Christmas holiday. May old St. Nick bring you something special!
