We have a New Moon on the second day of the new year! The New Moon at 12° 20’ Capricorn on 2 January 2022, 10:34 AM PST has a freshness to it as well as a stronger sense of marking new beginnings than the New Moons of recent months. This is a nice change and a great way to start the new year.
Cardinal signs are the self starters of the zodiac and Capricorn wields that energy in an intensely practical manner. On this New Moon, the Capricorn luminaries are trine Uranus in Taurus and semi-sextile Saturn in Aquarius. The connection to Saturn in Aquarius reinforces Saturn ruled Capricorn’s natural tendency to undertake important projects in an orderly fashion and persist until those are complete, no matter how long it takes. The trine to Uranus in Taurus adds a unique twist to how we get from point A to point B. Rather than thinking outside the box, we may completely take the box apart and rebuild it from the ground up in order to achieve success!
Adding to the sense of newness on this New Moon are the two planets that changed signs this past week. Both Mercury in Aquarius and Jupiter in Pisces are still at 0° and semi-sextile. Having Mercury in Aquarius is a real plus because it is naturally detached and can help us move away from a subjective point of view. When it comes to problem solving, perspective is very important. By stepping back and looking at the big picture, we often see alternatives we hadn’t been able to previously.
Jupiter in Pisces is a tricky proposition because it can lift us up or drown us in the depths of despair. Taking care to reestablish and reinforce our boundaries may allow us to enjoy the compassionate generosity of this amazing Jupiter without getting lost in the fog of denial. The semi-sextile to very mental Mercury in Aquarius might help too.
Venus in Capricorn is gradually pulling away from Pluto but it is still close enough on this lunation that we need to take it into consideration. When we’re developing our future plans and deciding what has to go before we can forge ahead, please be aware of Pluto’s tendency to raze the ground rather than be selective. We need to figure out what is truly valuable and necessary in our lives, and hang on to those. It does help Venus in Capricorn is also making a waxing sextile to Neptune in Pisces. This gentle, compassionate influence works through hands on, practical ways of caring for others.
Even though the sextile between Mars in Sagittarius and Saturn in Aquarius was exact on December 29, it is still close enough to have an impact on the New Moon. Mars is the only planet in a fire sign, and having Saturn in airy Aquarius fanning its flames gives this aspect more importance than it might otherwise have. This is especially true for all the fire and air folk out there who may be feeling a little lost these days. We can draw on the energy generated by this aspect to inspire us while doing the hard work needed to reach the first step on our new path.
The Saturn in Aquarius square to Uranus in Taurus is already waning though both planets are actively involved in the New Moon chart. We are getting a small of taste of how these two planets will operate separately again . . . no bad thing.
There is lots to like about this New Moon in Capricorn. We have an opportunity to start laying out plans for what we want to do and where we’d like to be at the end of this coming year. With earth and water dominating the New Moon chart, a pragmatic approach is best. Capricorn New Moons are perfect for planting the seeds of growth though we’ll need to allow plenty of time to patiently nurture those seeds before seeing results. For now we can sit quietly, contemplating our next direction before taking the first step into the new year. Peace and love to all.
